Do We Have Guardian Angels

22 May

Throughout history, the belief in guardian angels can be found in many pagan cultures and religions.

For example, listen to this traditional Catholic prayer to one’s guardian angel:

“Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day/night be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”

According to many Muslims, each person has two guardian angels, one on each side.

Do we have guardian angels? What does the Bible have to say about this?

1. Angels Are Assigned To Certain Countries

Daniel 10:12-13; 20-21 says, “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.”

“Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.”

Daniel’s prayer request wasn’t answered yet. The reason was that the prayer request was intercepted by a demon. An angel came and told Daniel that a spiritual warfare was going on between angels and demons of certain countries.

2. Angels Are Assigned To Children

Matthew 18:10 says, “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.”

The word despise means “thinking down upon someone or not caring for them.” This verse is teaching that whenever physical, emotional or spiritual harm is done to a child, that the angel will report that to God the Father. E.g., Child abuse, child neglect, making fun of their appearance, thinking bus kids are worthless.

The Greek word for little ones doesn’t refer to a teenager, but to little children. Little children haven’t reached the time of accountability, meaning they’re not responsible for their sins. If a little child dies, he is going to heaven. This truth should comfort you who have lost a baby or a little child.

These guardian angels have direct contact with God and may help ward off physical or satanic attack from someone.

3. Angels Are Assigned To Christians

Acts 12:7-15 says, “And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.”

Some theologians don’t believe an angel is assigned to a person but they believe that all of God’s angels protect you. Whatever you believe, it doesn’t change the fact that God protects his people with his angels.

4. Angels Carry Believers To Heaven

Luke 16:22 says, “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried.”

Notice that it’s not one angel, but angels plural.

Why do angels carry a believer to heaven? I don’t know the exact reason why, but I would like to offer some suggestions:

It’s a long way from earth to heaven to accompany you up there. Angels have wings and we don’t.

The devil is called “the prince of the power of the air.” It maybe that since you are going into the devil’s territory as you are going up that they are there to protect you.
